Buying a Mountain Bike

Sure there are a lot of Mountain bike shops around, or at least a lot of shops that will sell you a mountain bike.  But are you getting the right bike?  Is your bike having the time that’s needed for it to be built properly?  And lastly once you have shelled out for all that technology and infinite suspension tuning capability, do you know how to set it up?  Buying a mountain bike can be quite a daunting task as there are endless options once you take into account sizing, suspension design, geometry, travel and suspension tune.
So how are we any different? How do we hope to take away the smoke and mirrors?  Our approach to buying a mountain bike is a three stage process and in most cases won’t have you rolling out the door the first time you come in.  We take the time to get you on a bike we know won’t just “do the job” but will enhance your ring experience.  We also take the time to build the bike with meticulous care, and then lastly we take the time to make sure you are fitted to it properly and the suspension is setup and tuned while you are on it so you understand every knob and every dial.

   The consult
At My Mountain we take the time to make sure you get yourself on the right bike. We start with a few questions. Where do you ride, how long, how fast, how big? We may also be quite interested to know about your current steed. What do you like about it, what don’t you like about it, why are you upgrading etc? From there we will hopefully have two or three good solutions from our great range of bikes. And if you are unsure as to which option you prefer, or want to understand the differences in the real world, we have a fleet of demo bikes that are available for you to take to your favorite trails to test in anger

The build
With the industry standard to build a bike being around 30 minutes why does a full suspension bike take up to 4 hours at My Mountain? Well simply, because we do it right. In fact we spend 30 minutes on the wheels alone, by the time we true, tension and de-stress them, then check the torque setting on the cassette and rotor bolts. Our attention to detail can be easily spotted in some areas such as cable routing and brake setup, while other areas are more subtle like aligning the derailleur hanger with the wheel and correct positioning of the front derailleur. Many small improvements have a big impact on the bikes overall performance.

The bike fit and suspension setup
So with your bike built with much love, care and attention there is but one thing left to do. The suspension tune and bike fit. Starting at your feet and finishing at your fingertips the bike fitting takes into account your riding style, flexibility and proportions. With every aspect of the bike fine-tuned to your body you will not only find yourself feeling more in control and confident, but you will be more efficient and less prone to injuries and even crashing. Now assuming there is some suspension involved with your bike we finish with a complete suspension setup and tune. We will dial in the right amount of sag, rebound damping, slow speed compression, and lockout threshold while all the time explaining what we are doing and why. And if you struggle to remember a bunch of numbers, don’t stress. We will write it all down for you.

We aim to be the best mountain bike shop in Melbourne and hopefully one day the universe
