Shimano XT M788 Trail Wheelset
Redesigned for 2012 with all the latest technologies, the XT Trail wheelset is ideal for hard riding in demanding terrain, where wider tyres, longer travel and slacker geometry are all needed. Suiting 4-6" All Mountain bikes, the M788 wheelset widens the rim profile compared to the "Race" model, allowing for a stronger and stiffer design that will comfortably take up to a 2.5" wide tyre.
If you're looking for a well-engineered, feature-packed set of hoops, the Shimano wheels lineup is very tough to beat. Although Shimano have always had a reputation for building solid wheels for road and MTB, they have set out to redefine their range in order to encompass the high performance and precision engineering that all of their components are renowned for. The latest Shimano mountain bike wheels utilise wider rims, 24 spokes instead of 16, faster engaging hubs and a more conventional 2-cross lacing pattern, the new Shimano wheelset range is now stiffer, lighter, stronger and easier to maintain.

Rims

Being the biggest difference over the Race model, the rims used on the Trail version are both wider and stronger in order to stand up to more punishment off road. The box-section profile mirrors other Shimano MTB wheels and combined with the Anodized 7000-series alloy material, makes for a durable and ding-resistant rim. Stepping up the internal width to 21mm allows the XT Trail wheels to take tyres up to 2.5" wide so you can fit comfortably fit your favorite freeride or DH tyres and the genuine UST Tubeless design is without doubt the most reliable systems for tubeless tyres. You can obviously still use standard tyres and tubes, though the included tubeless valves make for a foolproof setup if you want to decrease rolling resistance with the tubeless system.

Spokes

To maintain crucial wheel stiffness, the XT Trail wheelset features a more conventional 24-spoke design that uses stainless steel straight pull spokes to provide greater strength over other brands "J" bend spoke style. The stainless steel spokes provide higher torsional strength and allow the wheels to be built up with higher spoke tensions for a stiffer overall build. The spokes are butted for reduced weight over cheaper straight-gauge spokes, though the they are slightly thicker than the spokes used on the Race model for improved strength and wheel stiffness.

Hubs

With a QR15 front hub and your choice of a 135mm or 142x12mm rear hub, the XT Trail wheels sit themselves firmly in the All Mountain category. Compared to cheaper options, the rear hub features a 36pt engagement freehub that allows for fast pickup while the steel cassette body is a more durable choice than an alloy or titanium construction. While some may be turned off by the simple cup and cone bearing design in the XT hubs, it is worth noting that these units get high-quality Angular Contact bearings that are heavily sealed to keep contaminants out. Should they get in however, you can quickly strip and rebuild the bearings with a couple of cone wrenches and some fresh grease. The bearing design also provides better load capacity under lateral forces compared with regular cartridge bearings, and the preload is also adjustable so you can stay on top of any side-to-side play. Continuing Shimano's dedication to keeping the XT wheelset stiff, the hubs feature oversized 7075 T6 Alloy axles that yield greater torsional strength at the fork and frame dropouts. The hubs feature Centrelock rotor mounts, however they can be run with 6-Bolt rotors when using the Shimano Centrelock-to-6-Bolt adapter.
