661 Evolution Full Face Composite Helmet
Stepping up the quality with a fiberglass/composite construction, the 2012 EVO helmet features a refined shape and additional protection compared to cheaper DH helmets. With interior channeling for improved ventilation and a CoolMax removable liner, the Evo keeps you from over-heating out on the trail while ensuring your noggin is safe from crash damage. While some folk may be inclined to spend their hard-earned on flashy wheels or anodized components, regular mountain bikers will know how much of a difference that having quality apparel can make to your ride. Thankfully, 661 have found a way to combine quality design and a high level of protection into top-value products. Whether it's their D30 body armour, Full Face helmets or slick range of MTB specific gloves, they've got all the pieces you could need out on the trail to ensure you're comfortable and protected.
Full Face Necessity
For Downhill or Freeride, a mountain bike full face helmet is a must. In fact, for Downhill races you won't be able to rock up to the start line without one. Providing more protection at the back of your skull, around the jaw and the chin and mouth, a Full Face helmet gives you more assurance in a wider range of crashes. Combined with a quality neck brace like a Leatt, you'll be ready for anything the trail throws at you, with confidence that your gear will be able to keep you and your body on the straight and narrow. 661 offer a wide range of helmets for the Downhill, Freeride or Dirt Jump rider, with differing levels of weight and adjustability. The EVO Composite helmet is their mid-level DH model builds upon the quality standards that 661 is renowned for as well as meeting the tough Australian standards for helmet safety.
Refined Design
Sitting in between the full carbon EVO helmet and the budget-friendly Comp 2 model, the Evolution balances protection, comfort, breathability and sleek design to provide a high quality sub-$300 lid. Sharing the same design aesthetic as the EVO carbon, the composite model utilises a hybrid fiberglass construction that keeps things lightweight, but more importantly boosts impact strength and absorption qualities over cheaper polycarbonate plastic. The composite construction also allows for more control over the moulding process, giving the 661 engineers the ability to build in a series of integrated exhaust ports and ventilation channels through the interior of the helmet that drastically improves the ability to dump heat. While this may not be apparent when stationary, as soon as you get up to speed you will notice the high level of airflow from the front to the back of the helmet, carrying away heat from the interior and reducing sweat buildup. But it seems that wasn't enough for 661, as they've also lined the padding of the helmet with CoolMax material to provide a moisture-wicking platform that works in conjunction with the increased air flow. The liner itself is removable, so you can wash it separately to avoid stink build-up every time you wear it. Sure it may not have the bling of its carbon siblings, but if you've ever had to throw away a $500 carbon helmet after smashing it on a rock, you'll likely appreciate the lower stress of riding with a helmet such as the EVO or Comp 2. It all adds up to create a high quality, comfortable helmet that is perfectly suited to hot Aussie riding conditions.
