If you're looking at getting a quality headset but don't want to spend the earth, FSA have a stellar range of products that give you precision engineering at a fraction of the cost of other "boutique" brands offerings.
The FSA The Pig DH Pro Headset is a new high-end offering from FSA that has been specifically designed to reinfore the headtube when using long travel forks on Downhill, Freeride and All Mountain bikes. Filling a gap in the current market for headsets that are made to take a punishing, the Pig DH Pro utilises a solid Cromoly construction for improved strength over lighter weight alloy headsets, while the longer 22mm deep cups push further into the headtube to provide further reinforcement. When using long-travel forks, there is a lot more leverage force on the headtube that conventional headsets are not designed to take. Using standard headsets with forks over 130mm long can lead to premature bearing wear and in some cases, the "ovalisation" of the frame's headtube, rendering the frame useless. FSA recognized this issue and have designed the Pig DH Pro accordingly, with deeper cups that press further into the headtube to provide better support for long-travel single crown and dual-crown forks.
The angular contact cartridge bearings in the Pig DH Pro are the same quality as used across FSA's high end headset range, though the lower bearing is a much larger "industrial" size and has a higher load rating as a result. Combined with the Cromoly construction and deep press fit cups, the Pig DH Pro is the choice for durability and strength.
