2012 Trek Session 9.9 Carbon Frame The shiny new Session 9.9 frameset is going to be a very popular option for DH racers this season, though the biggest problem we foresee is that given the demand, Trek will likely run out of these frames before they even land! The Session 9.9 represents the culmination of all of Treks suspension and frame technology into a thoroughbred DH race frameset that allows you to build up a seriously lightweight machine. Chances are that if you're looking at a carbon DH bike you will likely have a host of top-tier parts ready to go onto such a beast, and the Session frameset is the perfect platform to build the bike to end all bikes. You might not be racing on the world cup circuit or think you’re a potential pro, but you don't need to be to want every advantage you can get. You might be racing in your regional age group category, or trying to crack elite in the Australian State Series; it doesn't matter. The Trek Session 9.9 will give you an edge. Now running the same geometry as Aaron Gwin, the US made OCLV carbon frame uses all of Trek's 20 years in carbon manufacturing and introduces more technology yet. In Tension is a new material that Trek have developed that is used on the inner layers of carbon where incredible strength is required, and like all OCLV mountain bikes the more voulnrable parts of the frame incorporate carbon armour to protect it from sharp, high velocity impacts from flying trail debris. In fact you will find the carbon frame will hold up to trail damage better than the alloy version. The internal cable routing on this bike is very well thought out and works to keep your cable not only out of the way safe from damage, but makes the ride quieter and shifting more crisp. Should you not like the idea of running the cables through the frame the smart guys at Trek have come up with MicroTruss cable routing where the outer sits into a groove on the frame while the cable-tie goes into the frame and out the other side. An ingeniously neat design which is practically invisible. A word to the wise… get in quick, it's going to be banned!
Our favourite features of the Session 88
ABP DH offers all the benefits of Trek’s original ABP, and features a wider hub stance to accommodate wider DH wheels. It also has a drop out making it easier to seat the rear wheel providing a more secure and aligned wheel placement.
The Full Floater suspension design attaches the shock to two moving linkage points instead of the traditional one moving, one fixed. This standard way of thinking limits the suspensions tenability and can sometimes result in a harsh ride at certain points in the travel. Allowing the shock to “float” between two moving linkages gives the shock an increased ability to respond to bumps across a wide variety of terrain. It will feel like you have more travel, but you don’t...it's smarter travel.
