SRAM XG-1099 XX Cassette The sexiest cassette on the market, the XX is the cornerstone of the 2x10 XX groupset. Bringing innovative technology and design to the world of shifting, SRAM XX has caused quite the stir in the world of mountain bikes with its 10 speed drivetrain. While cranksets or rear derailleurs are usually the most ogled components, the XG-1099 cassette deserves all the attention thanks to its incredible CNC machined construction that is the result of 9 hours intense labour in forging, shaping, forming, sculpting and detailing a solid block of Cro-Moly steel into the worlds lightest mountain bike cassette. Used in conjunction with the XX crankset, the wide-range 10 speed cassette provides a bigger spread of gears than a traditional 9 speed unit so that you can downsize the number of chainrings up front. In fact, many riders are even going to 1x10 drivetrain setups thanks to the new 10 speed SRAM cassettes, as the 11-36t range can provide enough low and high speed gearing for rolling terrain with the benefit of being able to use a shorter cage on the rear derailleur and a shorter chain length for less chain slap and quicker shifting response. Though if you do tend to experience steep climbs and fast-paced descents, combining the XX cassette with a 2-ring or 3-ring cassette will give you a bigger gear range that will keep you on the bike for longer. The beauty about the 10 speed system is that you can mix 'n' match to create the ideal drivetrain for your bike and your riding style. Unlike regular cassettes that use a series of cogs and internal spiders, the middle 8 sprockets on the XX cassette are a solid unit, with the biggest gear being a machined alloy unit that press fits onto the main unit and the smallest gear being a steel cog that meshes with the alloy lock ring. The result is a sub-200 gram cassette that features the durability of a steel construction at the weight of a full Titanium or Alloy cassette. AL-7075-T6 Alloy is able to be used for the 36t cog due to its much larger surface area compared to smaller gears so that the chain causes less wear over time. From SRAM: "The revolutionary machined design of the XX Cassette uses the same grueling manufacturing techniques that produced the PowerDome road cassette. With X-Dome, eight of the cogs are CNC-machined together out of a single block of billet steel, creating an incredibly lightweight, precise and strong cassette. It’s a process that takes nine hours per cassette! You have never seen a cassette that looks like this. The open design aids in mud clearance, giving you cleaner shifting per-formance and longer component life". The SRAM XX Cassette features:
