Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3 Pedals
The new Eggbeater 3 pedals basically replace the previous Crank Brothers Eggbeater SL pedals. With a newly designed body that improves strength and drops weight, the new '3' and '11' pedals also have an updated bearing design, with the needle roller bearing taking on support duties on the inside, instead of the old bushing design. A number of years ago, Crank Brothers burst onto the mountain bike scene with their revolutionary clipless pedal design that offered incredibly low weights, in a minimalist, mud-shedding design that had other pedal manufacturers scratching their heads and asking; "why didn't we think of that?" The Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals and the following Candy pedals quickly took hold of the market with their brilliant design and light weight, offering riders a new clipless pedal option that had a focus on ergonomics like nothing before.

Minimalist Beater
Dubbed their "XC Race, Micro Platform" pedal, the Eggbeater is the one that started it all. With their classic 4-sided design, the simplistic arrangement of the two opposing 'wings' on the EggBeater gives it its distinctive shape and allows for easy entry from any angle. Aside from super slick entry and release, this clever but simple design allows for wicked mud-shedding ability and is probably one of the best pedals around for riding in mucky trail conditions. If you're sick of the "locked-in" sensation you get from other SPD pedals, you will love the Crank Brothers design that provides more angular float, without locking your knee into one position. This float is adjustable from between 15 degrees to 20 degrees, simply by swapping the cleats from left to right, though we would recommend most riders using the 15 degree setting unless you're after heaps of flexibility for your foot position. As far as minimalist pedals go, there is nothing on the market quite like the new Eggbeaters. They're superlight, easy to get in and out of, they shed mud, and with the new bearing design, they're also super durable and ready to serve you for years to come.

Needle Precision
The biggest news with the latest Crank Brothers range is the new bearing design that replaces the old bushing with a needle roller bearing for the crank side of the pedal. This design is only featured on the '11' and '3' models, and while it does improve durability, it also increases the pedals lateral stiffness under load. This means you get a stiffer, smoother rolling pedal that requires less maintenance overall and is less likely to develop excess play and movement. The Eggbeater 3 pedals will appeal to riders after a quality unit, without the chi-chi that comes with the expensive Titanium models. It uses a durable Steel construction on top of a forged Cromoly steel axle for plenty of reliability, while still coming in at just 140 grams per side. Like all Crank Bros pedals, they're still easy to take apart, with only a single Nyloc nut needing to be removed to open them up and gain access to the guts for cleaning and re-greasing. But if you ever do need to replace the needle or cartridge bearings, you can easily replace them with a Crank Brothers pedal rebuild kit. Nice one!
