Thomson Elite Seatpost

Thomson posts have been around for a long time, and are without a doubt the most sought after design on the market. The Thomson Elite Seatpost is an easy way to drop weight off the standard seatposts that come on off-the-shelf bikes, and an even easier way to give yourself instant cred on the trails. Each Thomson seatpost and Thomson stem is hand made in the US, and represent the ultimate upgrade for any serious mountain biker wanting a strong, stiff and light product that is of the highest quality.

Manufactured from high strength 7000 series aluminum, the Thomson Elite is unique in that the head and shaft of the post are machined from single piece of alloy with no bonding or gluing in sight. While this "integral-machining" is more labour intensive, it creates an incredibly strong post that is also lighter thanks to it's simple design. If you have a look inside the Elite post, you'll also notice that it uses an elliptical bore for a tapered wall thickness that reduces material on the sides of the shaft wall and increases thickness on the front/rear of the shaft wall. The idea behind this oval internal shape is that the majority of loads exerted on a seatpost come from hard pedalling where the riders weight is rocking forwards and backwards - hence the thicker and stronger walls for the front/rear of the tube. Combined with the 1-piece construction, the Thomson Elite Post is quoted as being 40% stronger than the strongest production seatposts on the market, which is all the more impressive when you consider the 228 gram weight!

The head of the Elite post is also one of the most copied designs around, with its twin-bolt adjustment providing a massive range of adjustment with the ability to fine tune the saddle angle like no other post available. The clamp area provides 41mm of support for the saddle rails and reduces seat rail bending on big impacts. In comparison, many other posts use 15mm of support and are far likely to bend or break your saddles rails under heavy loads.

"The Thomson seatpost design incorporates a bending fuse to prevent catostrophic failure. All other brand seatposts we tested - every one of them - failed in catastrophic failure with the seat and clamp components - and sometimes pieces of the tube and head - flying off in all directions. This type of failure would dump the rider. Thomson seatpost has a clamp, head, and upper tube strong enough to withstand 350 foot-lbs of torque. The tube will start to yield and bend at the seat tube clamp at about 250 foot-lbs of torque. Remember all other brand posts we tested flew apart at less than 150 foot-lbs of torque. Under severe impact the Thomson seatpost would bend slightly, the ride could continue."
