2012 Trek Superfly 100 Elite Carbon 29er
There are a number of bikes in the 2012 Trek mountain bike lineup that just scream "dialled" to us, and the new Superfly 100 29er is just one of those bikes. As seems to be the general theme for the Trek 29er range, the pricing has continued to come down and further improve the value of their state-of-the-art Superfly frame series, bringing the US-made OCLV carbon fiber technology to an even more competitive price point.
For 2012, the Superfly 100 Elite gets some cool new features including the 142x12mm thru-axle rear dropouts, a matching QR15 thru-axle for the Fox RLC fork up front as well as a brand new Kashima Fox Float rear shock. Aside from being Gold and blingy, the RP-23 rear shock utilises a custom Trek tune that is specific to each size and the ABP suspension design, which allows for a balance between pedalling efficiency and smooth, supple suspension that reacts to the smallest bumps thanks to the slippery Kashima finish. Also unique to Trek is the custom tuned FIT RLC Fox Fork that is designed to mimic the rear suspension to provide an unrivalled level of balance between the front and rear wheels. This kind of in-depth involvement in suspension and frame design is testament to the strength of Trek's R&D department and their commitment to building bikes that require very little fiddling or modifying out of the box.

Being the mid-level option, the Superfly 100 Elite gets a full Shimano XT 10 speed drivetrain as well as the impressive XT brakes to scrub off all that speed you'll be collecting. Although most will discount the Bontrager Race Lite wheelset, they are actually an excellent choice for the Superfly with their sub-1900 gram weight, DT Swiss made hubs with sealed bearings, standard DT Swiss spokes and wide-profile RL rims. Being Tubeless Ready, all you need is the Bonty specific rim strip and you've got yourself a super reliable Tubeless wheelset that is actually UST-certified - no bodgy conversions needed!
For those folk out there that are concerned of the durability or strength of a carbon fiber frame, Trek has gone a long way to prove you wrong with the use of a special OCLV Mountain carbon fiber blend that is used to provide a higher impact strength than their standard OCLV carbon that is used on the road bikes. Frame features such as the E2 Tapered head tube make a dramatic difference to front-end steering stiffness, and the net-molded BB95 bottom bracket goes to show Treks industry leading development in carbon technology as it is the only brand on the market that is able to precisely build a press-fit bottom bracket without any aluminum inserts. With all the R&D that goes into each of their bikes, Trek stand behind the quality of the Superfly with one of the only Lifetime Warranties available on a carbon mountain bike frame.
For flat-out XC Endurance racing, or just hitting up the trails with mates, the Superfly 100 is a fast and efficient option that will take your technical riding abilities to a whole new level.

Fragile carbon? Think again!

A few years ago Trek realised that everyday riders was still scared of taking carbon off-road. As the leaders in carbon fiber technology, Trek knew they could offer a better solution. So they  took the best engineers and designers, and asked for better carbon, built for off-road use. The result? OCLV Mountain Carbon.

OCLV Mountain Carbon takes the patented OCLV process and figures in the rigors of off-road use. It is reinforced in the right areas with unique materials, but preserves the lightweight, stiff carbon feel. Today, every carbon mountain bike Trek makes is built using OCLV Mountain Carbon—carbon that’s tougher than the trail, without the added weight.

Carbon Armour

Sometimes you need a little extra protection, so Trek developed a light, tough external shield.
In addition to OCLV mountain Trek have developed another layer of protection for those vulnerable areas
The Carbon Armour polymer shield provides reassurance to riders who know their down tube is bound to take some abuse.

FCC MTB

Oversized hub, flanges, and end caps create a flex-free 29" wheel capable of chewing through technical terrain. With a 29er wheel that has Wider and taller flanges with outboard J-bend spokes you get a stiffer wheel system.  FCC wheel system pushes the wheel flanges out and up, improving the bracing angle between flange and rim also adding strength and rigidity to the wheel.  A stiffer and stronger 29er wheel, that’s the result.

   Top swing magnesium link

Minimizes material and weight while maintaining a strong bracing angle for a more rigid frame.  One of the design challenges with 29ers is to keep a stiff, responsive feel, Trek’s top link goes a long way towards the overall snappy feel you get with the Superfly models.

Thru-axles front & rear

A 15mm front thru axle makes steering more precise for more feedback and control. The quick release feature allows for easy wheel removal for quick on-trail repairs. Thru-axle stiff, QR quick

Trek’s robust, confidence-inspiring 142mm hub + 12mm thru-axle system is about 35% stiffer than an open dropout design and is easier to install than a conventional 135x5mm system thanks to the tabbed guide in the frame's dropout.
And it’s versatile as well. For those riders who still want to use their 135mm thru-axle wheels, Trek include hardware adapters for an easy interchange if you still want to use your older 135mm wheels.

Put both these systems together and you get a stiffer, more responsive ride and overall a better wheel system.
