Pivot Firebird XT
Adding in the Cane Creek Angleset and new-for-2012 142mm Thru-Axle, the Firebird is going to be the All Mountain bike to beat this season. The XT Firebird is for serious trail enthusiasts who value DH-like performance, with it's adjustable Fox 36 Float RC2 fork and RP23 Kashima rear shock providing all the tune-ability you need for setting up your bike for all course conditions, while the XT groupset and DT Swiss wheelset leave little durability concerns and allow the rider to focus on the trail ahead.
The Pivot Firebird joins an ever increasing family of long travel trail bikes that have downhill capabilities moulded to trail bike performance. Pivot Cycles haven’t just taken their dw-link design and stretched it out to 167mm of travel to tick the “long travel” box in their line up, they have gone to town thinking about some of the design challenges associated with this style of bike. In order to increase frame stiffness and strength without going overboard on weight, Pivot have used a couple of key features on the Firebird to do just that. A full 1.5" headtube may look massive compared to the current crop of Tapered headtubes, but not only does it mean any fork standard will fit to the frame, it also gives the top tube / down tube interface a much bigger surface area to weld onto, increasing the strength of the frame up front. You also get Cane Creek Angleset compatibility, meaning you can play around with the Firebirds head angle to your hearts content, and shows designer Chris Cocalis' dedication to making this beast as versatile as possible. Another key area that dictates ride quality on a long travel dual suspension bike is lateral frame stiffness on the rear of the frame, and although the standard open dropout on the 2011 model was stiffer than most brands DH bikes, Pivot have stepped it up for 2012 with a 142 x 12mm Thru-Axle to lock the rear triangle even tighter. A carefully CNC machined lower link with Quad-row cartridge bearings keeps the rear end wiggle free and serves to improve rear wheel tracking through nasty rock gardens.
All of this frame technology serves to increase the Firebirds capability in seriously rough terrain and provide the pilot with a level of confidence for popping lips and railing berms like they're on a much bigger bike.
From Pivot Cycles:
"Born from the same technology that won six Downhill World Championship titles, it’s no wonder the Firebird descends “like a bat outta’ hell”. What mystifies the competition is how a bike so adept at going fast downhill can also climb with such skill and ease that dropping bikes with less travel when going up is a common occurrence. Built with 6.6” of dw-link® rear suspension, tuned for awesome pedaling efficiency, the Firebird is the ultimate long travel trail bike. Climbing and acceleration are lightning fast, and rocky descents are devoured. It’s so incredibly good that Mountain Bike Action named it one of the 25 most important bikes of all time because of its astounding range of versatility. Life might be all about compromises, but the Firebird isn’t."
XT Build
The most popular build in the Pivot range, the XT Firebird drops weight over the SLX build while improving adjustability and durability. Most importantly, the XT spec gets the shmick Fox Float 36 RC2 fork that features both high & low speed compression adjustment, gold Kashima coated stanchions and a lightweight air spring that can be adjusted to any rider weight. With a 20mm thru-axle employed to match the stiffness from the 12mm thru-axle rear on the Firebird, lateral frame stiffness is simply a non-issue and encourages riders to take the A-line. Keeping rotational weight down for the climbs, a custom DT Swiss 350 wheelset uses wide EX500 rims that give a stable platform for the 2.35" Kenda Nevegal tyres, which combined with the grippy DW-Link suspension, will have you climbing upside down. An FSA Gravity Light cockpit round out a very sweet package that leaves you with very few excuses.
