Pivot Phoenix Frame
The Pivot Phoenix sure is one sexy piece of bike engineering. Everywhere you look you see over engineered and flawless machined bits that are not only works of CNC art but are well thought out and functional. Take the rear dropouts as an example. Yes they do look impressive as well as stupidly stiff but the golden egg here is that you can swap these out with different dropouts that will adjust your chainstay length, bottom bracket height and wheelbase length. Yeah the guys at Pivot Cycles have gone to town to produce a World Cup winner, but they also appreciate that different riders might need different setups depending on the course. So as well as the replaceable dropouts the head angle on the Phoenix DH headtube is indexed, and is easily adjustable between 0, +/- 1/2, 1, or 1.375 degree settings via the Cane Creek headset.
Everyone is mad for a low centre of gravity on a DH bike, though it isn't the easiest characteristic to achieve. Take a quick look at a Pivot Phoenix DH bike and you'll see that Pivot have gone a long way to concentrate as much of the main pivot and shock weight as low in the frame as possible, whilst also employing a super low 13.6" BB height. These 2 techniques allow for a low centre of gravity and an "in the bike" sensation for the pilot, as oppose to feeling like you're sitting "on top of the bike". Other brands out there have used low BB's too, but they all suffer from an excessive amount of pedal strikes, as a soggy rear suspension setup will have your pedals coming alarmingly close to trail obstacles. The dw-link suspension design on the Phoenix has a certain amount of "anti-squat" built into it, so the suspension doesn't wallow when you stamp on the pedals, allowing you to comfortably power through rock gardens without fear of clipping your pedals. Unique to the Phoenix DH is the fact it has a distinct advantage in overall control and pedaling efficiency over other downhill bikes. Square edge bump absorption is incredible, and the suspension remains stable and controlled in the most extreme conditions. The Phoenix DH pedals like a champ, has the control of a pro and descends like an animal.
From
Pivot Cycles:
"The Phoenix DH is the ultimate expression of what dw-link® suspension can do for a rider. With the heritage of 6 World Championships built into it and plenty of podiums on its own, the Phoenix DH is the DH bike to have, whether you’re a top ranked World Cup racer or a weekend gravity pilot. The Phoenix has already proven to be the king of frame stiffness and durability in World Cup competition, while also having a distinct advantage in suspension control and pedaling efficiency throughout the travel. No other downhill bike offers the performance of a dw-link® equipped Pivot. When DH runs are decided by fractions of a second, the performance and confidence inspiring ride of the Phoenix DH is the tool you need to make it to the top step of the podium.
DW-Link
The dw-link suspension design allows us to achieve the ultimate ride. The perfect balance of traction, acceleration, square edge bump performance, superior braking, and the ability to handle big hits with ease is what Pivot bikes are known for. The dw-link's patented position sensitive anti-squat eliminates pedal bob during hard pedaling efforts out of the saddle and gives the bike additional traction while climbing (seated or standing) as well as really helping propel the bike forward during sprinting and hard efforts out of corners. The design starts out with a slightly rearward travel path for better square edge bump performance and then goes to a more vertical path, remaining active throughout the travel. The dw-link truly allows us the tunability to give the rider the best pedaling performance possible without sacrificing braking or suspension feel. Simply put, the dw-link is the next level of suspension design"
