The 2011 Troy Lee Design D3 Carbon Helmet is Troy Lees top shelf helmet designed for ultimate protection against the rigours of the modern DH racing scene. Although they share the same shape, the Carbon D3 is lighter and stronger than the Composite D3 version thanks to the clever use of carbon fibre in the construction of its outer shell. Some serious improvements in the EPS foam core as well as the introduction of the shock-absorbing dual density padding in the D3 helmets make them the top choice of DH riders and racers looking for the ultimate in protection and comfort.
Protection
With new features added to the 2011 Troy lee Designs helmet range, the Troy Lee D3 continues to evolve from the original ground-breaking Daytona helmet that dominated the market back in 1995. Stepping up from the Troy Lee D2, the D3 helmet uses a different shell that increases the chin guard size for better protection for your teeth, and the helmet inner features the new EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) construction that acts like a crumple zone in the event of an impact.
Because the EPS liner is thicker in the new D3 helmet, it is stronger overall but more importantly, is better at absorbing the force from an impact before it reaches your skull. But the TLD engineers haven't stopped there in their pursuit for ultimate protection. The actual padding inside the helmet that rests on your skin is a new dual-density foam that aside from making the helmet super comfortable, is actually designed to provide more shock absorption than the old padding.
In fact, TLD were so confident that they had produced the safest full face helmet on the market that they had the D3 carbon tested to motocross standards, which it not only passed but exceeded considerably.
Ventiliation
Another big upgrade area over the D2, is the additional ventilaion that you get from the TLD D3 Carbon Helmet, which uses a sophisticated vented and channelling system to increase air flow through the entire shell of the helmet. With 20 vents in total, each channel is connected up from the front of the helmet where cool air passes through the intakes, all the way to the exhausts at the back of the helmet. This rapid air flow keeps your core temperature down and reduces heat buildup inside the helmet.
In addition to this ventiliation is the use of Coolmax™ and Dri-Lex™ moisture-wicking materials that take sweat off your skin and evaporate it more quickly than standard foam liners. Even with all that ventilation and technology, your D3 is still going to get sweaty, though before it turns into a big smelly sock, you can take out the removable, washable MX-style padded liner to give them a clean and return your D3 back to its new-like glory.
