Crank Brothers Mallet 3 Pedals
The venerable Mallet pedals have received a facelift this year, improving on an already great pedal that builds around the minimlist Eggbeater design. With a lightweight Hybrid Aluminum/Nylon body, the Mallet has much greater surface area than the Candys and Acids, which is useful for downhillers and trail riders that use a rubber-soled SPD shoe. A number of years ago, Crank Brothers burst onto the mountain bike scene with their revolutionary clipless pedal design that offered incredibly low weights, in a minimalist, mud-shedding design that had other pedal manufacturers scratching their heads and asking; "why didn't we think of that?" The Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals and the following Candy pedals quickly took hold of the market with their brilliant design and light weight, offering riders a new clipless pedal option that had a focus on ergonomics like nothing before.

Designed for aggressive riders, the Crank Bros Mallet pedals are the ideal option for technical trails and fast-paced DH courses where maximum traction and stability are of utmost importance. Whether you're clipped in or not, there is plenty of platform for you to position your feet on, and with the easiest release on the market, you can be rest assured that when you need to unclip, a simple twist of your foot will seperate you from the pedal - no more wrestling with the pedal to dismount. You get adjustable pins like a straight-up flat pedal, so you can fine tune the amount of contact between the sole of your shoes and the pedal body, maximising traction without compromising on your ability to engage/disengage from the pedal mechanism. The 4-sided Eggbeater cage rotates around inside the platform, so entry is slick and allows you to stab your foot forward into the pedal like a conventional SPD, or roll your foot backwards into the pedal mechanism. Like all Crank Brothers Pedals, you can adjust the amount of "float" you have by swapping the cleats from left to right. This can be set so your foot releases from the pedal at 15 or 20 degrees rotation, though we would recommend the 15 degree setting for most riders unless you require heaps of flexibility in your foot position.

Needle Precision

The biggest news for the redesigned Mallet pedals is the introduction of a new bearing system for the top of the range model, the Mallet 3. While the 2 and 1 still use the standard bearing design, the 3 replaces the bushing on the crank side of the pedal with a needle roller bearing that steps up both durability and reliability. A needle bearing increases the pedals stability under lateral loads and provides smoother rolling that you will notice both immediately in your hands and years down the track when they still spin freely. The other side of the pedal uses a sealed cartridge bearing and the whole unit can be disassembled, cleaned, re-greased and rebuilt within 5 minutes - perfect for the privateer DH rider who doesn't have a team mechanic. Like the Mallet 2, the '3' gets the hybrid alloy/polycarbonate construction and along with additional machining has brought weight down to just 435 grams per pair - not bad at all for a hardcore DH pedal!
