Santa Cruz Heckler Over the years, the Santa Cruz Heckler has achieved a reputation in the industry for being one of the original "do-it-all" bikes, with it's stout frame, sure-footed geometry and generously plush suspension. Perhaps the cornerstone in the Santa Cruz Bike lineup due to it's long history, the Heckler is still as relevant in todays market as the day it first left the drawing board. Sure there are lighter bikes out there with more sophisticated linkages and frame designs, but there is something to be said for the timeless simplicity and clean lines of the Heckler that will always appeal to riders looking for maximum durability and reliability in a quality package. For 2012, Santa Cruz Bicycles have upgraded the Heckler to a full 6" suspension and it is now designed to accept forks between 140-160mm travel, depending on the ride characteristics you're after: 140mm for quicker handling in tighter singletrack, or 160mm for ultimate stability on steep, fast-paced descents. The curved top tube is designed to maximise stand over clearance, and combined with a shorter reach, gives you better ability at throwing around the Heckler in the air, or for pushing your weight back on really steep descents. From Santa Cruz: “Sharing the same surefooted and fun-loving geometry as the Blur LT and LTc, but with a super-bomber single pivot rear suspension offering 150mm travel, the Heckler recipe remains true: a tough aluminum frame, a solid, efficient suspension and some of the best trail manners out there. Mix together, and go shred some trail. Then go do it again. And again. And again...” Simply Advanced Just like the Bullit and Superlight, the Santa Cruz Heckler is all about keeping things simple and durable in a balanced, 150mm travel AM package. Taking a different approach to the brands Virtual Pivot “VPP” suspension, the Heckler relies on one main pivot for the rear suspension in order to keep things clean and uncomplicated, and as a result makes maintenance a breeze. New for the 2011 Heckler is the oversized 15mm aluminum pivot axle that runs on sealed Angular Contact bearings with locking collet heads – all designed to keep the rear end nice and stiff, while reducing complexity and service requirements. The pivot location for the Heckler has been designed to provide a certain amount of antisquat, which reduces pedal bob and gives you efficient pedalling in a wide range of gears. The high and forward nature of the main pivot means the rear wheel extend backwards under compression, allowing the rider to maintain more momentum on the rough stuff without having their rear wheel getting caught up on square edged hits. This is ideal for choppy terrain, where a lower main pivot would have your rear wheel getting "hung up" on roots or rocks, reducing your overall momentum. Although there are similar designs out there on the market, the Heckler maintains a unique ride quality due to its specific pivot placement and specially custom-tuned rear shock.
