Santa Cruz V10 Carbon Perhaps the most anticipated bike on the worldwide downhill scene, the carbon version of the incredible V10 yet again showcases Santa Cruz Bicycles dogged determination to constantly improve on already proven World-Cup winning designs. Improve how? Well the most obvious and talked about upgrade over the previous V10 has been the complete re-design of the V-10 front triangle in Carbon Fiber in order to increase overall strength, frame stiffness and reduce total weight. The engineers behind Santa Cruz took their time in releasing the carbon models, as they wanted to ensure that they could create a product unlike anything else on the market in order to elimate any possible stigma that even the most critical skeptic had in relation to using this futuristic material. First and foremost, the carbon V10 was about creating a stiffer and stronger frame that would respond faster and more accurately to steering input from the rider, producing a fast-handling bike that could track better and straighter in rough terrain. With an increase the lateral strength of the main frame, and combined with the beefy VPP linkages and solid aluminum rear triangle, Santa Cruz Bikes have created a stronger V10 that is also more kind on its bearings that are able to run straighter and smoother with less flex when pushing the bike hard into corners. An added bonus of using Carbon fiber is that total frame weight (with shock) has now dropped under 5 kg, which is jaw-droppingly good for a freeride bike, let alone a full blown race DH frame! Of course the stable VPP suspension continues, with its amazing pedal efficiency and square-edged hit capability allowing you to squeeze every second from the racecourse, while the newly designed grease ports mean the suspension pivots are just as quick to strip and rebuild between events. If you take your DH riding and racing seriously, you will be hard pressed to find a faster and more capable DH race bike on the market with the kind of technology that is packed into the V10. From Santa Cruz: “It was only a matter of time before the weight and strength benefits we were seeing oin our other carbon fiber bikes tempted us to apply the material to the V-10, with the same goals: reduce weight, gain strength. In this instance there was an additional goal: put the prototyes under the Santa Cruz Syndicate riders and go win World Cup Downhill races. Halfway through the 2010 season, the bike pictured here is still a prototype Syndicate frame, the frame weighs less than the aluminum frame it will supercede, and the new V-10c had won two out of three World Cups, finished third once, and was leading the World Cup overall. Only a prototype, already a winner.” Virtual Pivot Point The patented VPP suspension by Santa Cruz is characterized by 2 counter-rotating mini links that separate the front triangle from the solid rear swingarm. By creating a "virtual pivot point" for the rear suspension, instead of the fixed main pivot like on a Superlight or Heckler, the Santa Cruz engineers are able to reduce the effect that chain torque (pedaling forces) has on the rear suspension, effectively reducing the pedal "bob" that you would normally get on a dually. In fact, we would encourage you to get out of the saddle and hammer the pedals on a VPP bike to see just how efficient the suspension really is. By reducing the negative effects your pedaling has on the suspension, you are able to climb faster, sprint harder and get more power to the rear wheel in a much wider variety of trail situations - all with less effort. The other cool feature to the VPP suspension is the path that the rear axle takes as it compresses through the travel, allowing for a balance between pedal efficiency and the ability to absorb those square-edge hits on rocks and roots. It all adds up to suspension that does its thing without you having to worry about flicking levers or adjusting your riding style, whether you're on a buff switchback climb or descending a fast-paced rock garden. Santa Cruz have also gone out of their way to ensure that your VPP bike is easy to maintain, with clever grease ports for the lower links bearings and durable hardware that uses basic hex keys to strip down the suspension, all without having to remove the cranks or BB cups. Combined with the stout links and oversized aluminum pivot axles, the VPP design gives you quality suspension in a laterally stiff frame that is easy to maintain and will last you for years to come.
