So that's all well and good, but you may be asking; what the hell is cyclocross?
Perhaps the true missing link between road and mountain biking, cyclocross racing was created as an off-season sport for road cycling, where professional cyclists would take out a nobby-tyred road bike to ride on a circuit of gravel, dirt and mud. Being a Winter sport, cyclocross is usually held in terrible conditions and places huge demands on the rider and the bike to be able to ride through mud and over various obstacles on the course. A true cyclocross bike is aesthetically similar to a standard road bike, though features stronger cantilever brakes, lower gearing, chunky tyres and a more upright riding position.
The very first Cyclocross Melbourne series was held in 2010 and drew a lot of attention to this crazy Euro discipline. With riders smashing their way around a race circuit consisting of bitumen, grass, dirt tracks and a lot of mud, it has quickly become a popular spectator sport due to the small nature of the race courses and the high likelyhood of riders crashing and covering themselves in mud!
