2014 Santa Cruz Heckler 27.5 Complete Bike
Over the years, the Santa Cruz Heckler has achieved a reputation in the industry for being one of the original "do-it-all" bikes, with it's stout frame, sure-footed geometry and generously plush suspension. Perhaps the cornerstone in the Santa Cruz Bike lineup due to it's long history, the Heckler is still as relevant in todays market as the day it first left the drawing board. Sure there are lighter bikes out there with more sophisticated linkages and frame designs, but there is something to be said for the timeless simplicity and clean lines of the Heckler that will always appeal to riders looking for maximum durability and reliability in a quality package. Last year Santa Cruz Bicycles upgraded the Heckler to a full 6" suspension, with the ability to accept forks between 150-160mm travel, depending on the ride characteristics you're after: 150mm for quicker handling in tighter singletrack, or 160mm for ultimate stability on steep, fast-paced descents. They also fitted a tapered head tube, a curved top tube that's designed to maximise stand over clearance and a slacker head tube angle for better high speed stability. For 2014, the Heckler now comes decked out with the in-between wheel size; 27.5". Given it's 150mm of rear wheel travel and geometry revisions, the Heckler is essentially a single-pivot version of the popular Bronson bike, giving riders more choice when looking for the right Santa Cruz for their riding style and budget.

From Santa Cruz:

"The single-pivot reference redefined. The new Heckler comes straight off out All-Mountain Menu at Happy Hour. A killer Santa Cruz at a killer price. With 27.5" wheels, 150mm travel and the same super aweseome geometry as the Bronson, there's been no half measures during this intervention. So go celebrate Heckler's 18th birthday like it's 1995, safe in the knowledge this single pivot party keeps going long after the others have gone home."

D AM Build:
If you're looking to get onto a high quality Santa Cruz bike without having to spend the earth, the 'D' level build kit is your ticket. It comes with a rock solid parts selection out of the box, and despite being cheaper than the 'R' kit, packs performance and quality in all the right places. Firstly, the D AM build kit comes with a full Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain, complete with the Shadow Plus rear derailleur that features a one-way friction clutch for increasing chain tension to eliminate chain slap and the chance of derailment. Whilst the Deore crankset comes with a triple chainring setup, it does allow for full customisation. Don't need all that range but want maximum chain security? Take the rings off and fit a single 32t chainring and an upper chainguide for a super simple drivetrain that kisses goodbye the front shifter. Like the low range gearing but need more clearance? Swap out the 42t chainring for a bashguard so you can still climb steep trails easily and better protect the underside of the bike. Drivetrain aside, the D AM kit comes with low-frills Elixir brakes from Avid, which are not only super simple to bleed and service, but also have readily available spare parts such as brake pads and rotors, which you can pick up from any store including My Mountain. The most important part of the build kit in our opinion however, is the handbuilt wheelset that is laced up and tensioned in the Santa Cruz facility in California. WTB tubeless compatible rims utilise a wide 23mm internal profile, which setups up a beautifully stable platform for the 2.3" wide Maxxis High Roller 2 tyres. Not only do you get ridiculous amounts of traction and comfort from the large volume casing, but Santa Cruz have specced the higher quality EXO sidewalls that increase durability, knowing full well how much good quality rubber and rolling stock can make to the overall ride.

  • Shimano Deore 3x10 Speed Drivetrain with Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur and 2-piece Deore (42/33/24t) Crankset
  • Avid Elixir 1 Hydraulic Disc Brakes with 180mm Front and 160mm Rear Disc Rotors
  • Raceface Ride Seatpost, Stem and 710mm Low-Rise Bars with Lizard Skin "494" Grips
  • WTB Wheelset with ST i23 TCS tubeless compatible rims & SRAM MTH hubs; QR15 front & 142x12mm rear
  • Maxxis High Roller 2 EXO Tubeless Ready 2.3" Tyres

R AM Build:
Compared to the entry level 'D' kit, the R AM built steps up the quality with a Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain that gets the impressive Shadow Plus SLX rear derailleur for secure chain management when you're banging down a rocky descent. Out of the box you get the brand new Shimano Deore 2-piece crankset, which feature DynaSys chainrings in a 42/32/24t ratio. Brakes are upgraded over the previous Avid Elixir models to the new Shimano Deore units, which offer up smoother braking, improved reliability and ease of service too. The cockpit is provided mostly by RaceFace, with a low-rise handlebar and a twin-bolt seatpost that allows for easy setup to get the WTB saddle dialled for your riding position. Groupset aside though, the big deal with the R AM kit is the handbuilt wheelset, which is put together in Santa Cruz's Californian facility, with WTB i23 rims and Shimano Deore XT hubs. The rims are tubeless compatible, and are shod with top-end Maxxis EXO High Roller 2 tyres, which are also tubeless ready and come in a rock-swallowing 2.3" width. Santa Cruz recognizes the importance of quality tyres and a stiff, well-built wheelset, as they allow you to get the most out of the frames handling and provide traction where cheaper products falter.
