Santa Cruz Nomad Carbon
Along with the Blur models, the Nomad is one of the most popular options in the Santa Cruz Bike range - and for very good reason. With over 6" of efficient VPP rear travel, its super-stiff frame design and the capability to take up to a 180mm travel fork up front, the Santa Cruz Nomad can be built up as a long-travel All Mountain bike with air suspension front and rear, or as a coil sprung mini-DH beast with an insatiable desire for frequent flyer points. Whatever your desire, the Nomad screams versatility, and now with the option of the even lighter carbon fiber frameset on the Nomad C, the engineers at Santa Cruz Bicycles have been able to craft an even stronger and stiffer Nomad than ever. The latest Nomad Carbon uses a full 1.5" head tube for use with all 3 steerer tube standards, and allows the engineers to build in an incredibly beefy interface with the top and down tubes for maximum frame strength that capitalises on the versatility of carbon fiber frame construction methods. ISCG05 mounts around the bottom bracket shell are ready to fit on your favorite single or dual-ring chain guide, and combined with a standard front derailleur mount, you can fit up any gearing option that takes your fancy. Despite the impressive frame weight, Santa Cruz were never motivated by simply producing a super light AM bike, they wanted something that was durable, stiff and improved on the ride quality of the alloy Nomad. Perhaps coming as a surprise to some, the carbon frame is even stronger, and when combined with the beefy pivot hardware and the chunky mini-links on the VPP suspension, the result is a laterally stiff frame that can handle the side landings, jumps and crashes that come with big-terrain riding.

From Santa Cruz:

“It seems like barely a year and a half ago we totally revamped our beloved gnarl-hound with updated suspension, geometry and a host of details that saw an entirely new Nomad emerging from where the old Nomad had been - lighter, sleeker, snappier and at the same time tougher. Time flies. It was just a year and a half ago that eight unlucky souls got mangled in the Hellride while claiming first saddle time aboard the new beast. And while the now tried and true aluminum Nomad is still a vital part of our lineup, we decided to splice some carbon fiber into it's DNA and see what happens.”

R AM Build:
Using a Dyna-Sys 10 Speed Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain and powerful Elixir 5 disc brakes, the R build is a solid choice to get onto the Carbon Nomad at a cracking price. Keeping everything durable whilst still dropping weight, the AM Nomad adds on a Mavic XM321 wheelset with wider, stronger rims that will take a punishing, and the wider High Roller tyres increase cornering grip over skinnier XC tyres, especially in loose terrain. A nice 'n' wide Truvativ bar and stubby stem aid in the Nomads DH stability and the larger disc rotors hint towards the potential mayhem you can comfortably get yourself into.
  • Shimano 3x10 speed Drivetrain with Deore XT derailleurs and M552 2-piece crankset
  • Avid Elixir 5 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm front and 160mm rear disc rotors
  • Truvativ Stylo Team 685mm low rise Bars and AKA Stem
  • Easton EA50 seatpost and WTB Volt saddle
  • Mavic XM 321 Wheelset with Shimano XT rear hub and WTB 20mm front
  • Maxxis High Roller 2.35" folding kevlar tyres
  • Compatible forks: RockShox Lyrik Solo Air R 160mm Taper QR20, RockShox Lyrik Solo Air RC2DH 160mm Taper QR20, Fox 36 Talas RLC 120/160mm Taper QR20

SPX AM Build:
The 2012 SPX build is basically a full Shimano XT build, with an upgraded DT Swiss wheelset that is substantially lighter than the cheaper options. Compared to the XC builds, the AM uses a wider, stiffer wheelset that increases overall rigidity to give more responsive and sharp handling, even when loading the bike into big berms. The SPX AM Nomad is finished off with the brand new 2012 Shimano XT brakes, sweet Thomson Elite seatpost and Easton Haven riserbars to keep everything light and ridiculously good looking. Choose from the solid RockShox Lyrik forks or the travel-adjustable 36 Talas fork from Fox.
  • Shimano 3x10 speed Drivetrain with full Deore XT shifting, cranks and derailleurs
  • Shimano XT Trail hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm front and 160mm rear Ice Tech rotors

XTR AM Build:
Building up your All Mountain Santa Cruz Nomad with XTR makes perfect sense when you factor in the build quality and efficiency of the XTR drivetrain, with its triple chainring crankset up front and wide-range cassette giving you every possible gear for shredding the trails up or down. The 2012 XTR AM build gets a custom build DT Swiss wheelset with 27mm wide EX500 rims that allow you to comfortably run 2.35" wide tyres, while building up a stronger and stiffer wheel than the XC versions. It also features the RockShox Reverb height-adjustable seatpost, that allows you to drop your saddle up to 5" at the flick of the handlebar remote lever. If your terrain is steeper and you ride harder than most of your XC buddies, the AM build will suit you without getting something that is overweight and sluggish.
  • Shimano 3x10 XTR drivetrain with 24/32/42 crankset, 11-36t cassette and M985 Shadow Plus rear derailleur
  • Shimano XTR Trail Hydraulic disc brakes with 180/160mm Ice Tech rotors
  • Thomson Elite stem with Haven carbon riserbar
  • RockShox Reverb Height-adjustable Seatpost with WTB Volt SLT Ti saddle
  • Chris King Headset
  • Custom DT Swiss Wheelset with DT 240s rear hub, Chub 15mm/20mm front hub and DT EX5400 rims
  • Maxxis High Roller 2.35" folding kevlar tyres

XTR 1x10 AM Build:
For 2012, the XTR 1x10 build is exactly what it says on the tin; a single chainring up front with a wide-range 10 speed cassette that gives you simplicity and secure chain tension thanks to the MRP G2 SL Mini chainguide. With the new 11-36t wide range 10 speed cassette, a 1x10 setup doesn't give up too many gears to a regular 2x10 or 3x10 setup and provides more accurate shifting with less chance of dropping a chain when going hard. Santa Cruz have also cleverly specced the new "Shadow Plus" XTR rear derailleur that runs a higher tension level on the lower cage in order to stop the chain from bouncing around. Cobined with the chainguide up front, the 1x10 build keeps the chain where it should be no matter how hard you ride.
  • Shimano 1x10 XTR drivetrain with E*13 34t chainring, 11-36t cassette and M985 Shadow Plus rear derailleur
