2012 Exposure Diablo Light Mk.3
Without doubt one of the lightest and most compact helmet lights on the market, the Diablo light from UK Company Exposure also happens to be one of the brightest helmet lights on the market, with a blinding 975 Lumens of power. Designed and manufactured in England, Exposure lights have been engineered by a bunch of egg-heads who began the company due to their love of off road night riding. With a desire to create better rechargeable bike lights than what was available on the market at the time, the designers set out to create a specific range of mountain bike lights that were tough, compact, cable free and bearing in mind the terrible UK weather; sealed against the elements. Looking up close, you'll be able to tell that each unit has been lovingly CNC machined, with a tough alloy casing that allows for fine tolerances and perfect alignment of all parts to ensure everything seals up tight. As LED technology has sky-rocketed ahead of the old halogen and HID bulbs, Exposure have been able to capitlise on their compact designs due to the efficient nature of LED's, with less room having to be taken up by big heavy batteries. Not only are LED lights efficient, they are also becoming more powerful as new globes hit the market, such as the Cree XPG units used on the 2012 Exposure bike lights range. Unlike a lot of the cheap Chinese lights on the market, the Exposure lights actually have their output verified, so you're getting all the light you paid for, in a high quality package that's designed to last a lot longer too.
Wicked Power
The Diablo is Exposure's brightest helmet specific light, and is designed to be used on and off road either as a solo light, or in conjunction with a handlebar light if you really want to see through time. Updated for 2012, the Diablo gets higher spec LED globes for improved efficiency and higher power output. The main advantage of using a helmet light over a bar light is that you have the ability to direct the light where you want to see, such as around switchback climbs or sweeping downhill corners. This is particularly important if you ride on tracks with lots of tight corners, where a bar light is only going to point where you're steering. The compact design of the Diablo light means you'll be hard-pressed to notice the 125 grams of weight on your helmet, and the clever adjustable helmet mount is incredibly simple to fit to any vented helmet, while being very strong to resist moving around. Out on the trail, the Diablo will pump out 975 Lumens for over an hour (High), or 600 Lumens for 3 hours (Medium). It even has a Low setting that is ideal for riding on the open sections on the trail or on the road, and with 300 Lumens it will give you up to 10 hours of burn time. The easy to use toggle button is located on the back of the light, and allows you to change between each power setting, allowing you to use different levels of light depending on the trail conditions so you can get more burn time out of the battery. You can either charge it from a wall socket or via the USB charger in your computer.
From Exposure Lights:
"The Diablo is one of our most popular lights. This light is often handlebar mounted with road users or helmet mounted for the ultimate mtb helmet light. Power to weight is sensational with nearly 1000 lumens and only 124g. The Diablo uses three Cree XPG R5 LEDs. The Cree XPG R5 is a more refined, higher quality LED of the same type used in the 2011 range. It keeps the same great beam patterns and colour temperature but the light has an additional 7-10% output over last year’s models. We are quoting 325 lumens per LED rather than the 300 in 2011. The Smart Port Technology means that you can run a range of accessories from your Exposure Light, from extra batteries to a remote switch".
For those longer Enduro events, such as 12 and 24 hour races, the Diablo can be hooked up with an additional battery pack that increases the burn time. This is a compact "Piggyback" battery that can be stored in your Camelbak or jersey pocket and is a great upgrade if your night rides are on the more epic side of things.
