2012 Exposure Maxx-D Mk.4 Light
A 1285 Lumen powerhouse from UK Company Exposure, the Maxx D handlebar light uses 4 Cree XPG LEDs to create an ideal setup for endurance riding and racing. Designed and manufactured in England, Exposure lights have been engineered by a bunch of egg-heads who began the company due to their love of off road night riding. With a desire to create better rechargeable bike lights than what was available on the market at the time, the designers set out to create a specific range of mountain bike lights that were tough, compact, cable free and bearing in mind the terrible UK weather; sealed against the elements. Looking up close, you'll be able to tell that each unit has been lovingly CNC machined, with a tough alloy casing that allows for fine tolerances and perfect alignment of all parts to ensure everything seals up tight. As LED technology has sky-rocketed ahead of the old halogen and HID bulbs, Exposure have been able to capitlise on their compact designs due to the efficient nature of LED's, with less room having to be taken up by big heavy batteries. Not only are LED lights efficient, they are also becoming more powerful as new globes hit the market, such as the Cree XPG units used on the 2012 Exposure bike lights range. Unlike a lot of the cheap Chinese lights on the market, the Exposure lights actually have their output verified, so you're getting all the light you paid for, in a high quality package that's designed to last a lot longer too.

Mighty Power
The Maxx-D light is designed to provide all of the power you could possibly want when riding off road, in a neat cable free design that doesn't rely on external battery packs or messy wires. Housed inside the high quality CNC alloy body is a lightweight Lithium Ion battery cell (much like your mobile phone) that provides the incredible power and efficiency behind the LEDs. Like all Exposure rechargeable bike lights, the Maxx-D comes with an AC wall charger for topping up the juice at home, as well as a USB cord that allows you to charge the light on your computer. The Maxx-D comes with a very solid handlebar clamp, that is also made from machined alloy and as a testament to the company's engineering quality, it even features stainless steel bolts and an anodized engagement clip. You can adjust the tilt depending on your bar setup and the trail conditions, while the clamp itself will fit onto either 25.4mm handlebars or newer 31.8mm oversized handlebars.

Not just a firecracker
While many riders will be drawn to the Maxx-D for its raw power, it's also worth noting that this punchy light also works extremely well for endurance racing and can operate as a slow-burner if required. If you check out the next 24 hour race, you'll find a lot of competitors use the Maxx-D light on the medium setting (900 Lumens), which happens to be the same output as the Exposure Diablo light. The reason they do this, is that you get more than enough power for off road trails, yet with an incredible 10 hours of burn time! This means you can get your way through all of the night laps without ever having to charge your light or use external battery packs - neat.

From Exposure Lights:

"The fourth generation of MaXx-D light has been developed from the Mk.1 with 960 lumens up to a whopping 1285 lumens on full power. The MaXx-D can run for three hours whilst staying in the same compact unit. The MaXx-D uses four Cree XPG R5 LEDs. The Cree XPG R5 is a more refined, higher quality LED of the same type used in the 2011 range. It keeps the same great beam patterns and colour temperature but the light has an additional 7-10% output over last year’s models. We are quoting 325 lumens per LED rather than the 300 in 2011. Smart Port Technology enables you to use a variety of Exposure Lights accessories which are powered from your light, make your light last for even longer using Piggyback batteries or make switching between modes even easier with the optional Remote Switch".
