Crank Brothers Candy 2 Pedals
The new Candy 2 pedals are part of the newly re-designed Crank Brothers Candy range. You will notice that the old resin cage has been replaced with a 2-piece machined alloy cage, that although adds a small amount of weight, increases the pedals overall strength and ability to take hits when your pedal gets close to rocks and roots on the trail. A number of years ago, Crank Brothers burst onto the mountain bike scene with their revolutionary clipless pedal design that offered incredibly low weights, in a minimalist, mud-shedding design that had other pedal manufacturers scratching their heads and asking; "why didn't we think of that?" The Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals and the following Candy pedals quickly took hold of the market with their brilliant design and light weight, offering riders a new clipless pedal option that had a focus on ergonomics like nothing before.
Sweet As
Crank Brothers classify the Candy as a "Small Platform / All Mountain" pedal, as the increased surface area from the machined pedal body provides a more substantial platform for your feet when compared to the diminutive Eggbeater pedals. This increased surface area between your shoes and the pedal results in a stiffer feel with less flex from your foot over the pedal axle, and boosts rider confidence when riding over more technical terrain as you have a bigger target to aim for when clipping in. The entry/release is still 4-sided like the Eggbeater, but because the cage rotates inside the platform, entry is not quite as lightning-quick as it's anorexic sibling. Unlike Shimano SPD pedals, the spring mechanism is not adjustable, but it doesn't take long for the cleats to bed-in and provide smooth engagement. Also unlike Shimano is the significant amount of 'float' that allows your foot to rotate on the pedal before unclipping, which is great for dodgy knees that don't like being locked into the one position. You do have the ability to adjust this release angle, by swapping the cleats from the left-to-right shoes to change from 15 to 20 degrees rotation. We would recommend most riders go for the 15 degree setting, unless you really like to move your feet around on the pedals and require the additional movement offered by the 20 degree position. For riders wanting a stiffer platform for more confidence when bombing rockier and more technical terrain without carrying around a boat anchor, the Candy is the ideal choice.
Rock Solid Performer
A step above the base model '1' in the Candy series, the quality of materials on the Candy 2 are substantially better with a modest increase in price giving you a stronger and more reliable pedal. You get Stainless Steel pedal springs, a forged Cromoly steel axle and a highly machined alloy pedal body that keeps weight down but impact resistance high - especially compared to the older resin-bodied pedals. To allow the pedal body to rotate smoothly on the axle, the Candy 2 pedals use a simple cartridge bearing and bushing setup that is both smooth and ridiculously easy to maintain. A simple locknut on the end of the axle is all you need to remove in order to clean and re-grease your pedals to keep them spinning freely for seasons to come. However, if the bearings ever do wear out, you can easily replace them with a Crank Brothers pedal rebuild kit. Nice one!
