Crank Brothers burst onto the mountain bike scene several years ago with their revolutionary clipless pedal design that offered incredibly low weights, in a minimalist, mud-shedding design that had other pedal manufacturers scratching their heads and asking; "why didn't we think of that?" The Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals and the following Candy pedals quickly took hold of the market with their brilliant design and light weight, offering riders a new clipless pedal option that had a focus on ergonomics like nothing before. While Crank Bros continues to inspire other areas of the market with adjustable seatposts and beautifully designed stems and posts, their 2011 pedal range features a more evolution approach than revolution, with improved surface finishing for better integration with shoes, higher quality bearings for improved durability and more intensive manufacturing to keep the weights low and the pedals strong.

Pedal Shims

The Tread Contact Sleeve kit is a new product from Crank Brothers designed to fit the latest Eggbeater pedals range. Included in the kit are several plastic "rings" of varying thicknesses that are designed to clip onto your Eggbeater pedal to provide additional contact between your shoe and the pedal body. If you've ever found your Eggbeater pedals to have too much movement and play side-to-side, then this is the kit you need. Depending on the brand of shoe you have, there can be an excessive distance between the sole/tread of the shoe and the pedal body. Although you will still be able to clip in and out without problem, you may experience excessive lateral play due to the lack of support from the pedal body.

The Fix
Simply remove the existing plastic rings off your Eggbeater 11, 3 or 2 pedals and replace them with a matching pair of tread contact sleeves. You can choose between 1mm, 2mm or 3mm thick versions, depending on the distance between the sole of your shoe and the pedal body, though it's best to start off with the 1mm version and work your way up until you've eliminated the play. You'll still maintain the float and pedal engagement/release that is so important with the Eggbeater pedals, and each sleeve features an internal lip that locks into place on the pedal body, so they'll stay nice and tight too.
