Big Platform
The Shimano XT Trail Pedals are a new addition to the Shimano MTB pedal range for 2012, following the design of the highly successful XTR Trail pedals yet at a fraction of the cost. Compared to the standard "Race" models, the Trail version gets an alloy platform around the entire body of the pedal, to achieve addtional contact between the pedal and your shoe. This provides extra stability, especially when using a rubber-soled SPD shoe such as the Shimano DX shoe or the 661 Filter SPD shoe. The other bonus of this design is that the pedal becomes a much bigger target to hit when you're unclipped and desperately trying to get your cleat into the pedal, as there is more metal to aim for. With only a modest increase in weight over the Race XT pedals, the Trail pedals will suit riders who frequent rough, rocky terrain where any additional stability or ease of entry is welcomed.
