The Shimano XT Race Pedals have undergone a redesign for the 2012 season, featuring a drastic increase in surface area between the sole of the shoe and the pedal body. If you look closely, you'll notice a silver machined area on either side of the pedal body that provides a more solid platform than previous designs. This leads to a more stable feeling underfoot, with less lateral play between your shoe and the pedal itself, increasing stiffness and power transfer. Mirroring the XTR pedal design, the M780's bring weight down to just 343 grams for the pair. Although you can find lighter options than this, nothing will have the same functionality and reliability offered by the Deore XTs. Speaking of, the XT's utilise adjustable sealed cartridge bearings that allow you to remove play in the axle, and the internals can be pulled apart for cleaning and re-greasing if they ever need it.
