661 Recon Mountain Bike Helmet
Part of the new school of MTB helmets, the 661 Recon brings forth increased coverage and improved protection for those trail and All Mountain riders that are pushing harder and riding in more technical terrain. If you don't want a heavy full-face helmet but want more protection than your average road or XC lid, the Recon should be your next stop for quality protection. While some folk may be inclined to spend their hard-earned on flashy wheels or anodized components, regular mountain bikers will know how much of a difference that having quality apparel can make to your ride. Thankfully, 661 have found a way to combine quality design and a high level of protection into top-value products. Whether it's their D30 body armour, Full Face helmets or slick range of MTB specific gloves, they've got all the pieces you could need out on the trail to ensure you're comfortable and protected.
Modern MTB Design
The 661 Recon helmet definitley can't claim to be the first trail riding specific helmet, but they sure can claim to be making one of the best. Clearly inspired by moto, the 661 Recon helmet uses an extended rear profile to drop the base of the helmet lower down on the skull, to provide more coverage around the back of your head. While it's not exactly a full face helmet, it does increase protection and safety for when you take a spill and knock your head back onto the trail. Packing in the features, the Recon XC has a removable visor, internally channeled vents that help with air flow and the "Detox Retention Fit System". This comprises of a dual clasp at the rear of the helmets internal bracing hardware that allows you to tighten up the harness according to the circumference of your head, allowing for a snug fit without digging into your skin. Also quite impressive for this type of helmet is the weight. Tipping the scales at a scant 300 grams, the Recon helmet won't become an issue on long rides as you will hardly realise you're wearing it. Like any good MTB helmet, the Recon gets a full in-mould construction that sees the polycarbonate outer shell wrapping around the underside of the helmets rim to shield the EPS foam core from damage out on the trail or during transportation. Speaking of, the helmet is built with a slightly thicker construction compared to road/XC helmets, so the Recon will take more of a beating and provide additional cushioning for your noggin in the event of a crash.
