Bontrager Rhythm Pro Wheels
For it's weight, there is nothing else available that has the sheer versatility and strength of the Bontrager Rhythm Pro wheelset. Sharing the same profile as the entire Rhythm range, with its 28mm wide rims, Offset Spoke Bed technology, TLR system, and convertible hubs, the Pro model tips the scales at just 1765 grams, bringing them into the realm of XC wheels. However, you're more likely to find the Rhythm Pro wheels bolted on to a 5-6" travel All Mountain bike, which is where its strength and lateral rigidity is most noticeable, particularly under heavy and aggressive riders. While some riders only value wheel specs and weight on paper, experienced riders will understand the importance of a stiff and responsive wheelset that is going to be much more lively out on the trail. Compared to a flimsy lightweight wheelset, you'll get faster acceleration, quicker handling and a higher level of confidence when you're banging through repeated hits on a choppy descent. The overall rigidity of the Rhythm Pro wheels is down to a number of contributing factors; the stiff Scandium alloy rims, a 28mm wide profile, the high-flange hubs and the burly axle design. Combined with a quality build using DT Swiss Competition spokes in a traditionally laced pattern, the Rhythm wheels will impress you with their straight-line acceleration and responsive handling.
For 2012, the Rhythm Pros see a completely new DT Swiss made hubset that features thru-axle compatibility via swappable end caps, as well as a re-designed 3-pawl freehub mechanism that has sped up engagement over previous models and, more importantly, makes for a much more durable system. The freehub is also dead easy to pull apart and service, so you'll have no worries about the Rhythms going the distance. Along with the standard sealed cartridge bearings and DT Swiss spokes, the Bontrager wheels are surprisingly simple and easy to maintain - a nice change from the proprietary wheelsets on the market.
From Bontrager:
"Bontrager's best all-mountain wheelset, the Rhythm Pro has everything discerning trail riders demand. The proprietary-designed aluminum hubs are forged and CNC-machined for outstanding strength to weight. And the specially design hub flanges are optimized to provide maximum support for the butted 14/15G spokes, extending durability and increasing lateral stiffness. To help keep weight to an absolute minimum, the Rhythm Pro's 28mm wide anodized rims are made from Scandium, resulting in maximum strength and durability with minimal rotational weight".
TLR Tubeless System
Rather than having to rely on aftermarket conversion kits or be forced to go down the UST route, Bontrager decided to come upwith their own tubeless system called TLR (TubeLess Ready). The premise of the TLR system is quite simple as all you require is a TLR compatible rim, the corresponding TLR rim strip, a tubeless valve and a tyre that is ready to set up tubeless. The Rhythm Elite wheelset comes with both the rim strips and tubeless valves.
The real beauty about the TLR system is that you have the choice of running standard tyres, UST tyres or Tubeless Ready tyres depending on your needs, in fact you can simply use standard tyres and tubes if you prefer. If you need to replace a spoke all you need to do is remove the TLR rimstrip and carry out the repair as you would with a normal wheel - no funky spoke nipples, no proprietary tools - just a simple design that works. The same goes if you get a nasty hole in the tyre casing; just remove the tubeless valve and fit in a regular tube. While we would always recommend using some sort of sealant inside a tubeless tyre (Stans No Tubes or Bontrager SuperJuice), it is a requirement when using a non-UST tyre, in order to create an airtight seal. |
