Shimano XTR 10 Speed Shifter Right Hand M980
The XTR rear shifter is designed to link up to the 10 speed XTR rear derailleur as a super-slick shifting setup that is the perfect choice for 1x10 drivetrain setups. Thanks to the Shimano Dyna-Sys 10 speed system, going to a single chainring up front is more feasible due to the wider range 11-36t cassettes that are available from both Shimano & SRAM. If you like the idea of a lighter and more simple drivetrain that does away with the front shifter & derailleur, a 1x10 setup with a 34t or 36t chainring is ideal as it reduces complexity and maintains the most usable gear ratios, while also increasing ground clearance under the bottom bracket. Sure you won't quite have the same super low granny gear or the big-dog for motoring fireroad descents, but for the majority of trail riding you will find the wide-range cassette will provide more than enough ratios. Other added benefits of using a 1x10 drivetrain is that you can utilise a chain device to secure the front chainring for improved chain retention, as well as the ability to run a shorter chain length that allows the rear derailleur to fire off snappier and faster shifts. For super steep climbing or flat-out XC racing, a double or 3x10 drivetrain will still be the best option, but for a lot of the trails out there a 1x10 setup makes a whole lot of sense.

Drawing on the dramatic M970 groupset that took the brave step back towards Rapidfire shifting technology, the M980 updates the design with 10 speed functionality and improved shifting ergonomics. Dubbed "Vivid Index", the latest shifter internals on the XTR units get a more positive engagement that results in a chunkier feel through the levers for each gear change. Shimano went to great lengths to also ensure that each shift felt the same as the last one, so that regardless of whether you're changing into the biggest gear or you're clicking through the smallest cogs - the shifts feel the same. It's this quality feel that separates XTR shifting from its cheaper counterparts, and riders who appreciate the very best will fall in love with the accuracy and smoothness of the latest M980 drivetrain.
Not stopping there however, Shimano wanted to reduce weight further for riders who are using the XTR disc brakes, and so created an integrated mount called "I-Spec". The I-Spec shifter simply bolts onto the brake lever clamp, resulting in a lighter setup that also de-clutters the handlebar. If you're not using Shimano brakes however, fear not as you can simply use the standard clamp versions. Weight has been whittled down everywhere else you look too, with the release trigger featuring a cut-out design and even the barrel adjuster getting attacked with the drill bit to drop grams. The main paddle shifter uses a semi-drilled profile that increases tactility for your thumb so that downshifting is quick whether you're riding in the dry or sopping wet.
