Shimano XTR M985 Disc Brake
With the latest 10 speed XTR groupset, Shimano didn't just re-design the drivetrain for the extra sprocket, they also took their hydraulic disc brakes back to the drawing board to improve on what was already a very good stopper. Bringing a completely re-designed Master Cylinder, Ceramic pistons, Ice-Tech pads and rotor technology, the latest M985 XTR brakes increase stopping power by 20%, reduce brake-fade and improve sexiness by 86%. While you may have to beat off the magpies from trying to steal your shiny Chrome brakes, you certainly won't be worrying about having enough power or control while blasting downhill.

Ice Tech
Brought to the market in 2011 with the gorgeous XTR groupset, the Ice-Tech system is a collection of small details that add up to create a better brake that is more capable of dissipating heat. The trick new brake pads feature an Aluminum backing plate that reduces the heat buildup generated from braking more quickly than steel-backed pads. With less heat on the pads, the Mineral Oil inside the brake calliper is kept at a more consistent temperature and the result is stronger braking that doesn't fade on long descents. Another key area that has seen change is the use of full Oversized Ceramic Pistons that not only increase surface area and thus braking force, but are also less heat-affected than metallic pistons and continue the theme of fade-free performance. Compared to the Deore XT and SLX brakes, the XTR model gets a 1-piece calliper that is forged and machined out a single piece of Alloy to reduce weight over the bolted 2-piece units.

Compared to the previous M970 brakes, the latest M985 models get an inline Master Cylinder that uses a far shorter lever blade that is not only lighter but also much stiffer. This provides a solid braking feel and allows for easy 1-finger braking. Reach adjustment is controlled via a hex-key bolt that drops a few grams over the M988 Trail model, providing a more steam-lined aesthetic to the lever body. The new split lever clamp improves ergonomics over the previous model as it allows the user to remove and install the brake levers without having to remove shifter pods or grips. And if you're running the new XTR shifters, you can integrate the 2 with the I-Spec mount that bolts the shifter onto the brake lever clamp, reducing weight and providing a super clean setup for your cockpit.

On The Trail
The biggest difference with the newest XTR brakes over previous models is the notable boost in raw braking power. So much so that these brakes would be suitable for riders on longer-travel bikes that are chasing light weight but still want something that can pop your eyes out of your head. While ultimate braking power will be determined by rotor size (you can choose 160, 180 and 203mm rotor sizes for the XTR brakes in both Centerlock and 6-Bolt) the M985's still retain the impressive modulation that Shimano hydros have always had, albeit with even more control and finesse when you're on a 30 minute descent and the rotors are hot enough to fry eggs on. If you want superlight but don't want to sacrifice braking performance or durability, Shimano XTR Race brakes are the best of all worlds. Sure, they might not be as adjustable as the M988 Trail brakes, but if you're a lover of simplicity and lightweight, there is no better brake on the market.
