Trek BB95 Press-Fit Bottom Bracket GXP Truvativ / SRAM
Replacement bottom bracket for carbon Trek mountain bikes such as the Superfly and Fuel EX, the BB95 is the ultimate press-fit system. While other press-fit bottom brackets require a sleeve or housing for the bearing before it is pressed into the frame, the Trek BB90/95 simply presses the individual bearings straight into the frame. This creates a lighter and simpler system again, but more importantly it allows Trek to create an even wider and stronger bottom bracket shell. Trek is currently the only Carbon manufacturer in the World with the technology to build a bottom bracket shell to the precise tolerances required to have a bearing securely pressed in.
While traditional bottom brackets rely on threaded BB shells and cups that are screwed onto the frame, the press-fit standard simply presses the bearings into the shell much like a headset. This removes redundant material, while also maximising bearing size and BB shell width, which in Trek's case is 95mm as oppose to the regular 68mm width you'll find on standard road bikes. A wider BB shell provides a stiffer platform for your pedalling, adding substantial rigidity to the lower portion of the frame for faster acceleration and better response under power. With a specific bearing setup that is compatible with SRAM / Truvativ cranksets, the GXP BB95 kit is the replacement option for riders using a GXP crankset such as the SRAM X0 crank or Truvativ Stylo crank. The Trek BB95 bottom bracket uses the same inner bearing diameter as regular external GXP bottom brackets, so it is designed to work with standard GXP cranksets. This is how it differs from the BB30 standard, which requires a very specific BB30 bottom bracket shell and matching BB30 crankset. Trek have proven that their massive 95mm wide bottom bracket shell with a regular SRAM crankset is just as stiff as the bigger BB30 setup, though the advantage with the Trek Press-Fit system is that you don't require a special crankset.
If you don't own a Trek carbon mountain bike, but need a replacement Press-Fit bottom bracket, check out the Shimano and Truvativ options in the "Bottom Brackets" listing that will work with the BB92 press fit standard.
Note 1: BB95 refers to the width of the frames bottom bracket shell; 95mm. The Trek Madone road bike range uses a similar system called BB90, as it uses a narrower bottom bracket shell width of 90mm that is specific to road bikes. For Trek carbon mountain bikes, the BB95 is the correct bottom bracket to use.
Note 2: BB30 is a completely different standard. BB30 uses a 30mm crank spindle as oppose to the standard 24mm, and so requires both a BB30 specific frame and crank. You can not fit a BB30 crank to a Trek mountain bike frame.
From
Trek Bikes:
"BB95 is an OCLV technology that allows the bottom bracket a 95mm wide stance with Net Molded precision-fit sockets and press-fit bearings, compatible with all major crank manufacturers. This wide stance allows greater surface area for the OCLV Carbon tubes, resulting in a stronger, stiffer platform".
