Application
If your bike is suffering from brake squeal or poor braking performance, it can often mean that your pads and rotor have been contaminated with oil or grease. If you act quickly, you can remove these contaminants easily with a quality brake cleaner to avoid further damage to your brakes and/or potential brake failure during a ride. As the brake cleaner is a pressurised aerosol, give the can a shake before squirting the high-pressure spray directly onto your disc brake rotor for a couple of seconds while spinning the wheel. Ensure you are not spraying anything else behind the rotor/bike, and that you are cleaning your brakes in a well-ventilated environment. You only need to hold the nozzle approximately 10cm away from the rotor to be able to blast off any contaminants that are evaporating as you spray. After spraying one side of the rotor, do the other side to make sure all braking surfaces are clean. If you are concerned that your brake pads have been contaminated with oil (such as chain lube, grease or brake fluid) you can remove them from the brake callipers in order to spray them directly with disc brake cleaner. Rub off any residue with a clean rag then re-install pads after they have dried.

My Mountain Cleaning Tips
If you have followed the above steps and are still getting the same symptoms pre-cleaning, there may be more serious contamination than initially suspected. While there are many wonderful & amazing methods out there for decontaminating brake pads, not all of them work and some can be downright dangerous! However, lightly rubbing your brake pads and the rotor braking surface with fine sandpaper is a fairly common technique to further remove contaminants and any permanent oscillation patterns that could be causing noise, though if you're not an experienced mechanic, your best bet is to take your bike to a quality bike shop before potentially damaging your brakes. In many cases, contamination can actually be too bad to reverse and you will need to replace the disc brake pads with a new set. While other brake cleaners are based on automotive products, Muc-Off is designed specifically for mountain bike disc brake systems and also happens to be safe on rubber, plastic, metals and carbon. However, we would still recommend to avoid spraying directly onto your skin or onto other components aside from your disc brakes.
