Unlike external bottom brackets, the Howitzer system utilises a solid axle that is part of the bottom bracket as oppose to being part of the cranks. It is more like an ISIS BB in that it is a single cartridge that threads into your BB shell, with both crank arms attaching separately. The difference to the old ISIS system however, is that the Howitzer places its bearings on the outside of the frames shell so that there is no restriction on their size. The end result is a stiff, durable BB that can handle much higher loads with improved long term performance as you're not relying on tiny internal ball bearings.
The Howitzer Team BB is the better option of the Howitzer range, with higher grade materials and bearings to provide improved fit and finish as well as longer life. We figure for hard-hitting riders are going to want something that you don't have to replace often, and in this case spending a few extra dollars to begin with pays itself off down the track. Like the GigaPipe DH bottom brackets, the Howitzer gets a solid CrMo Steel axle that minimises flex and increases outright strength - perfect for flat landings and drops. The external cups are CNC machined out of alloy and house massively oversized sealed cartridge bearings for load capability and smooth spinning performance.
