Schwalbe Nobby Nic Tyre 26x2.25" UST Tubeless
The Nobby Nic tyre is the "All rounder" tyre in the Schwalbe mountain bike range, and is designed to provide you amazing levels of grip in a wide range of conditions, whilst being super fast too. Compared to the Schwalbe Racing Ralph, you will notice only a slight increase in rolling resistance, but a whole lot more cornering grip, especially when things get a little loose. Schwalbe tyres are renowned as being some of the best mountain bike tires on the market. The highest quality rubbers in multi-compound designs, carefully engineered tread patterns and super dense casings for a supple and compliant ride are the key reasons why the Schwalbe MTB range is just so good. The Nobby Nic Tyre is an ideal front tire for wet or rough conditions. In wet and rough conditions we actually recommend running it both front and rear for a confidence inspiring setup that won't slow you down on the racetrack. For general XC and trail riding, our hot tip at My Mountain is to combine the Nobby Nic up front, with a Racing Ralph on the rear for super fast, yet confident handling in a wide variety of terrain. The Nic is outstanding in loose and rocky conditions, as well as loamy soil, and performs whether it is wet or dry on the trail. At just 745 grams, it is exceedingly light for the amount of grip that it dishes out, which is a result of using the high quality EVO casing and triple rubber compound.
UST Tubeless PaceStar Model
The Nobby Nic UST tire is designed to be run tubeless, which means you can say goodbye to 99% of pinch flats. A tubeless system allows you to run less air pressure, again enhancing the grip of the tire's tread. Better traction, less vibration, and no flats lead to a great ride. We recommend running a bit of sealant within the tire to quickly seal thorn or debris punctures. While the UST-certified Nic may be heavier than the TL model, you're getting thicker sidewalls that keep the tyre more stable under hard cornering and when running lower pressures. This thicker UST casing also steps up durability and abrasion resistance making it an ideal option for riders wanting a reliable tubeless setup without any compromise in sidewall durability. Unlike the cheaper Schwalbe tyres that often come on stock bikes on the showroom floor, the Nobby Nic UST uses Schwalbe's Triple Compound technology and high-spec woven casing. Schwalbe recognizes that it's not possible for one compound to do it all, so they've combined three to optimize the tire's performance wherever possible. Compared to the heavier duty tyres, the Nic gets the 'PaceStar' compound that has been formulated to reduce rolling resistance and maximise tread life. Combining a firm base rubber that forms the internal skeleton for the tread blocks with two layers of softer rubber over the top, Schwalbe ensure that the Nic doesn't get squirmy when riding it hard through tight corners. The knobbly tread of the Nobby Nic provides excellent traction in dry 'n' rough conditions to all kinds of wet conditions. And its cornering is outstanding thanks to its U-Blocks. A U-Block is a block of tread angled 20 degrees or so towards the outside of the tire. A small sipe doesn't quite divide the block, creating the "U". The U-Block works to counteract the natural outward force the tire is under when cornering, helping to control the forces and keep the bike stable.
EVO vs Performance
For 2012, Schwalbe have introduced 2 distinct ranges in their tyre lineup; EVO and Performance. While they have always had the EVO models, they have introduced the cheaper 'Performance' range to compete with lower-priced offerings from other brands such as Maxxis and Kenda. Each tyre is available in both models, which is to say that you can get a Racing Ralph Performance tyre and a Racing Ralph EVO tyre. You will see the cheaper Performance tyres used on many complete bikes from Giant and Merida, as they allow you to get the Schwalbe name at about a 30% cheaper pricepoint. While they may share the 'Racing Ralph' or 'Nobby Nic' name, the difference between them is the quality of the tyres casing and rubber compounds, leading to a substantial difference in speed, grip, suppleness and acceleration. Aside from being about 10-15% lighter, the EVO models are also Tubeless Ready, so the thicker bead lock means they can safely be used on a tubeless wheelset along with some latex sealant. The Performance range uses a single rubber compound that is much cheaper to produce but misses out on the ride quality that you get with the EVO models. For this reason, we are exclusively stocking the EVO range from Schwalbe, as believe a high-quality tyre can make a massive (and noticeable) difference to the overall ride characteristics of your mountain bike. If you want maximum grip, acceleration with a smooth & supple ride, the choice is easy.

"Devilish grip! Nobby Nic has truly great grip, cornering speed and defies wash-out, which is why so many riders love it! And pros are surprised how it has been possible to have so much grip with such low rolling resistance. The secret is 3 +’s: Hi-tech manufacture + an Evo-carcass + triple compound + U-blocks."
