Thomson Elite X4 Stem
The newest mountain bike specific Thomson stem, designed specifically for 31.8mm oversized handlebars is the aptly titled Elite X4. Like the legendary Elite seatpost, the X4 stem body is machined from a single piece of 7000 series aluminum alloy. This particular blend of aluminum yields a greater strength to weight ratio than cheaper alloys, and so the X4 stem achieves a higher level of stiffness while coming in at an impressive weight. Sure there are lighter stems available, but none can match the Thomson in terms of stiffness. And when riders are going to QR15 axles, tapered head tubes and wider rims, having a stiff cockpit can make a hell of a difference in terms of steering precision. The large faceplate is also responsible for this stiff platform, with its secure 4-bolt design and tight tolerances allowing for a solid clamping surface on your handlebar that is also kinder on lightweight carbon bars due to its load-spreading capability.
